What this site knows about you
Short version: the atlas itself collects nothing about you. It is free because it shows ads from Google, and Google's ads use cookies. Here is exactly what that means.
Who runs this site
Khurram Iftikhar, 2320 Schwechat, Austria (Impressum). The atlas is a personal project. Email: [email protected]
What the atlas stores
The map remembers a few choices in your own browser so it looks the same next time: light or dark mode, your filters, whether the story card, camera flights and side panel are on, and that you have seen the quick guide. This stays on your device (in "local storage"). It is never sent to me or to anyone else, and clearing your browser data removes it.
There is no account, no sign-up, and no analytics of my own. I do not know who visits or what they look at.
Advertising
The atlas shows ads through Google AdSense. To do that, each page loads a script from Google. Google and its advertising partners may then:
- set and read cookies or similar identifiers in your browser,
- receive your IP address, your browser and device type, and the page you are viewing,
- use this to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure ads and prevent fraud, and, if you agree, to personalise ads based on your interests.
Google is responsible for that processing under its own policies: see How Google uses information from sites that use its services and Google's advertising policies. Data may be processed outside the EU, including in the United States.
Your choices
- In Europe: on your first visit Google's consent message asks whether you accept advertising cookies. You can refuse, accept, or choose in detail. If you refuse, you may still see ads, but they are not personalised.
- Change your mind: clear this site's cookies in your browser and the consent message appears again.
- Personalised ads in general: turn them off for your Google account at adssettings.google.com.
- Block cookies or ads in your browser. The atlas works exactly the same without them.
Hosting
The site is hosted on Cloudflare. Like every web host, Cloudflare processes your IP address to deliver the pages and to protect against attacks. Fonts and the mapping library are served from this site itself, not from other companies.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask what data is held about you, and ask for it to be corrected or deleted. I hold none, so for anything about ads please use Google's tools above. You can also complain to the Austrian data protection authority (dsb.gv.at). Questions: [email protected].
